Best upsell combinations to sell on Shopify: 7 that work
The seven upsell and cross-sell combinations that lift AOV on Shopify, when to show each one (in-cart, post-purchase, thank you page) and how to set them up.
Paid traffic keeps getting more expensive, and the cheapest order you will ever get is a bigger version of the one a shopper is already placing. That is the whole case for upselling. The difficulty is not deciding to do it, it is picking the right combination: which trigger product, which offer, and at which moment.
An upsell combination is those three things together. Get them right and the offer reads as help. Get them wrong and you add friction to a sale you had already won. This guide covers the seven combinations that work across most catalogs, the moment each one belongs in, and how to launch them.
Timing decides whether a combination converts
The same offer can convert at 3% or 12% depending on when it appears, because the shopper’s state of mind changes across the purchase.
Before checkout: the consideration phase
When a shopper adds an item to the cart they are still evaluating. They are open to suggestions that make the purchase more complete, but not to anything that requires new deliberation. An in-cart popup that appears on add to cart works here if the offer is cheap, obvious and needs no variant decisions. As a benchmark, in-cart offers typically convert in the 2-6% range.
After payment: the one-click window
The post-purchase page appears between payment and the thank you page. Shopify keeps the payment method available for a short window, so the shopper can accept an offer with a single click and the item is added to the same order. The original sale is already captured, so a decline costs nothing. Post-purchase offers typically convert in the 5-15% range, which is why they are the place to put higher-value combinations. See pre-purchase vs post-purchase upsells for a full comparison.
After the order: the thank you page and order status page
Once the order is confirmed the shopper is relaxed, and they will come back to the order status page to check tracking. This is the moment for low-pressure combinations: a subscription, a next-order incentive, a survey. It also shows for every order, including those paid with express wallets where Shopify does not display a post-purchase page.
The 7 upsell combinations that work
1. The complementary add-on (in-cart)
Offer the obvious companion to the product just added.
- Camera → memory card or bag
- Leather boots → protector spray
- Coffee beans → paper filters
Keep it under about 30% of the main item’s price and free of size or colour choices. This combination has the lowest friction of anything you can show before checkout, because it reads as “did you forget this?” rather than as a pitch.
2. The product upgrade (in-cart)
Instead of offering more products, offer a better version of the one in the cart.
- 128GB phone → 256GB for $100 more
- Single bottle of serum → 3-month supply at a lower price per ml
- Standard plan → premium plan
Frame it as value, not spend: “Save 20% with the 3-pack.” The original item acts as the price anchor, so the upgrade looks like the smart choice rather than an extra cost.
3. The one-click post-purchase add-on
The shopper has paid and sees a single relevant offer they can accept with one click.
- Resistance bands → digital workout guide
- Protein powder → shaker bottle or sample pack
- Phone case → screen protector
This is where offers priced at 30-50% of the original order belong. The commitment has already been made, so a $20-30 add-on that would have felt heavy in the cart feels easy here. Read why one-click upsells are so effective for the mechanics.
4. The bundle (in-cart or post-purchase)
Group the products that complete a routine or a kit and price them below the sum of the parts.
- Shampoo + conditioner + mask as a “Complete hair care set”
- Coffee + biscotti + mug as a “Morning ritual bundle”
- Serum → “Add the other two steps of the routine for 25% off”
Bundles reduce decision fatigue: one yes instead of three. Post-purchase, the “complete the set” version performs well because the shopper has already committed to step one.
5. Buy more, save more (in-cart)
Quantity tiers reward shoppers for adding more of the same item.
- Buy 2 tees, get the third at 50% off
- 3 lip products for the price of 2
This only works on products people genuinely buy in multiples: basics, consumables, gifts. Applied to a one-off purchase it just looks like a discount you did not need to give.
6. The subscription upsell (post-purchase or thank you page)
For consumables, the best upsell is the same product on a schedule.
- Dog food → monthly delivery at 10% off
- Vitamins → monthly delivery plus a free pill organiser
Offer it after the initial decision so it never interferes with the first sale. The shopper already wants the product; you are only removing the chore of reordering.
7. The downsell after a decline
A declined upsell is a signal, not the end. Follow it with a lighter option.
- Declines the $50 case → offer the $25 case
- Declines the $60 bundle → offer the $20 single add-on
The downsell catches shoppers who liked the idea but not the price. Cart X supports up to three upsells and three downsells in a single post-purchase funnel, so each decline can branch to a cheaper or different offer instead of ending the sequence.
Matching combinations to your catalog
| Store type | In-cart combination | Post-purchase combination |
|---|---|---|
| Apparel | Buy more, save more on basics | Complementary accessory |
| Beauty and skincare | Product upgrade (larger size) | Complete-the-routine bundle |
| Supplements and food | Buy more, save more | Subscription |
| Electronics | Complementary add-on (cable, case) | Higher-value accessory, then downsell |
| Home goods | Bundle | Complementary add-on |
If your catalog has fewer than five products, start with one complementary add-on post-purchase and one downsell. Add in-cart combinations once you know which pairings shoppers accept.
Writing the offer so it converts and stays compliant
Shopify’s post-purchase rules are strict: no misleading urgency, a clear decline option, and no charge without an explicit action. They also happen to describe what converts. A clean offer looks like this:
Add the travel mug to your order Keeps coffee hot for 6 hours.
$28.00$21.00 (25% off) [Pay now · $21.00] [Decline offer]
State the benefit in one line, show the strike-through compare-at price when discounted, label the button with what happens (“Pay now”), and make “Decline offer” or “No thanks” visible. Skip countdown timers and “before it’s gone” headlines.
How to set these combinations up in Cart X
- Pick the placement. In-cart popup, one-click post-purchase, or thank you page and order status page.
- Set the trigger. Target by product, collection, cart value or customer tag, so the camera buyer sees the memory card and the coffee buyer sees the filters.
- Choose the offer and discount. Add the product, set a percentage or fixed discount, and add a downsell if the placement is post-purchase.
- Design it. Match your brand in the editor. No code is required and it works with any theme because it runs on Shopify Checkout Extensibility.
- A/B test and read the analytics. Test one combination against another and judge by revenue per view, not conversion rate alone.
Try it on your store
Cart X is free for stores up to 100 orders a month with every placement included, so you can test two or three of these combinations before paying anything. Install it from the Shopify App Store and launch your first funnel today.
