How to increase average order value on Shopify: 7 tactics

Seven ways to increase average order value on Shopify: post-purchase upsells, free shipping thresholds, bundles and volume tiers, with profit math behind each.

If you run a Shopify store you are almost certainly paying more per customer than you did two years ago. Traffic still brings orders, but the profit on each one is thinner because acquisition cost keeps rising. You can fight that by finding cheaper traffic, which gets harder every quarter, or by getting more from every customer you already paid for.

That second option is average order value. It is the most controllable number in your business: it does not depend on an ad platform’s algorithm, only on what you offer a shopper who is already buying. This guide covers why AOV matters more than its definition suggests, and seven tactics to raise it.

Why AOV is your most profitable metric

Average order value is total revenue divided by number of orders. The number looks basic until you put it next to customer acquisition cost.

  • You sell a product for $50.
  • It costs $20 to make and ship.
  • Gross profit is $30.
  • Acquiring that customer cost $25.

Net profit on the order: $5. Now add a $5 relevant cross-sell to that same order.

  • Order value: $55.
  • Gross profit: $35 (assuming a low-cost add-on).
  • CAC is still $25, because the customer was already acquired.

Net profit moves from $5 to $10. A 10% increase in order value doubled the profit, because acquisition cost is fixed per order and every additional dollar in the cart arrives without it.

There is a second effect. If your AOV is $75 and a competitor’s is $50 at similar margins, you can afford to bid more for the same click. Higher AOV does not just make each sale more profitable, it lets you win the traffic auction.

7 tactics to increase average order value

Tactic Best for Effort Risk to conversion
One-click post-purchase upsells All stores Low None (sale already captured)
Free shipping threshold Stores with AOV above about $40 Low None
Bundles and kits Catalogs with 3+ related SKUs Medium None
Volume discounts Consumables and basics Low None
Loyalty milestones Stores with repeat buyers High None
In-cart cross-sells Larger catalogs Medium Low if relevant
Gift-with-purchase thresholds High-margin products Low None

1. One-click post-purchase upsells

Right after payment, the customer is in what behavioural economists call commitment bias: they have decided, they trust you, and Shopify still holds their payment method for a short window. A post-purchase offer shown here can be accepted with one click and added to the same order, with no re-entered card details.

Because the original payment is already captured, a declined offer costs you nothing. That is the reason post-purchase offers typically convert in the 5-15% range while the same offer shown before checkout typically converts at 2-6%, and why this is the tactic to start with. Read the goods and bads of post-purchase upsells for the trade-offs.

Rules that hold up: one offer that clearly complements the original product, priced under 50% of the order, with a one-line benefit statement, a strike-through compare-at price if discounted, a “Pay now” button and a visible “Decline offer” link. Follow that with a downsell if they decline.

Cart X runs this as a one-click post-purchase funnel with up to three upsells and three downsells, built on Shopify’s checkout UI extensions so it loads inside the native checkout without slowing it down. If checkout speed is a concern, see how to stay under 200ms INP with native UI extensions.

2. A free shipping threshold

Free shipping is a goal, not a perk. “You’re $18 away from free shipping” turns a spending decision into a problem to solve. In FedEx’s consumer research, 81% of shoppers said they would spend more to reach a free shipping threshold (FedEx newsroom).

Set the threshold 10-30% above your current AOV. If typical orders are $75, $99 is reachable; $150 is not. Show progress in the cart so each added item reads as progress toward a reward rather than as cost. Free shipping is configured in Shopify’s shipping settings, and the cart message comes from your theme or a cart app.

3. Bundles and kits

Bundles reduce decision fatigue. Instead of asking a shopper to choose five products, you give them one answer: the “Starter routine”, the “Brew-at-home kit”, the “Essentials pack”. A good bundle solves a complete problem, feels curated rather than random, and costs slightly less than the parts.

Build-your-own bundles go further. “Choose any 3, save 15%” gives the shopper agency inside a framework that still hits your target spend, and it avoids the objection of a fixed kit that includes something they already own. Build bundles around outcomes (“what does my customer want to achieve faster?”), not around what you need to clear. The best upsell combinations to sell on Shopify has bundle examples by category.

4. Volume discounts

For products people reorder (supplements, skincare, pet food, socks), tiered pricing rewards stocking up:

  • 1 for full price
  • 2 for 10% off
  • 3 for 15% off

Order value rises now, and the customer’s next purchase is pushed further out, which lowers your effective acquisition cost per unit sold. Do not apply this to one-off purchases; it becomes a discount you did not need to give.

5. Loyalty milestones

When a customer is close to a reward tier, spending a little more to reach it feels rational. “Spend $100 in total to unlock free shipping on future orders” turns a $85 cart into a $100 cart.

Set the first milestone slightly above your AOV so customers stretch once, and show progress in the cart and on the order status page. This tactic needs a loyalty app and ongoing management, which is why it ranks lower on effort.

6. In-cart cross-sells

An in-cart popup on add to cart is the right place for cheap, obvious companions: the filter for the coffee maker, the cable for the device. The shopper is still deciding, so keep it to one offer, under 30% of the item’s price, with no variant decisions.

Pre-purchase offers carry some risk to conversion if they are irrelevant or interruptive. Target them by product or collection rather than showing the same offer to everyone, and measure cart-to-checkout rate before and after.

7. Gift-with-purchase thresholds

A tangible reward often beats an equivalent discount. “Spend $150 and get a free premium case” typically outperforms “Save $15” because a gift feels like a win and a discount feels like a price. Choose gifts with high perceived value and low cost to you, and make the threshold visible on product pages and in the cart so it influences behaviour before checkout.

Where to start

Not every tactic needs a tool. Shipping thresholds live in Shopify settings, bundles live in your catalog, loyalty lives in a dedicated app. The transactional moments, in-cart, post-purchase and thank you page, are where an upsell app earns its place, because those are the moments a customer is most likely to say yes.

Start with one post-purchase offer. It has the least setup, carries no risk to the sale you already have, and gives you a measurable result within a week. Then add a free shipping threshold, then bundles.

FAQ

How can I increase AOV without discounting?

Bundles, gift-with-purchase thresholds and complementary cross-sells all raise order value at full price. Discounts are a lever, not a requirement.

Does increasing AOV hurt conversion rate?

It can when offers interrupt checkout. Post-purchase offers appear after payment, so they cannot affect the original conversion. Test in-cart offers carefully and watch cart-to-checkout rate.

Which tactic should I start with?

Post-purchase upselling. Lowest setup, zero risk to existing conversions, fastest measurable result. Add shipping thresholds and bundles once it is running.

How do I know it is working?

Track AOV and net profit per order together. AOV can rise while profit falls if discounts are too deep. If both rise, the tactic is working.

Try it on your store

Cart X handles the three transactional placements, in-cart popup, one-click post-purchase and thank you page, with targeting, A/B testing and analytics included. It is free for stores up to 100 orders a month with every feature, so you can measure the AOV lift before paying anything. Install it from the Shopify App Store.
